Thanks Vern,

It's been almost a year and a half, and now all too soon, it is your turn to face the decision. Whether we believe in doggy heaven or not, I know that Jasmine is waiting for Cabo, ready to take her chew toy and reform her old pack.

Thanks for there for Jasmine and me.

Hi Vern

I stumbled upon your Meetup group, "Old Dogs, New Tricks", and it seemed to be that you might be interested in looking at my product, Tersus.

Tersus is an open source, visual programming that makes it easy to create web and mobile application with very little training (compared to alternatives), while retaining full flexibility. It has been used to create anything from small tactical applications to large scale enterprise systems (including a full-fledged ERP system).

I will happily provide more information (I'm now based in Silicon Valley). If you decide to give Tersus a try, we'd love to get your feedback.

Regards,

Youval Bronicki

One more thing I should add ...

This whole technology stack is rapidly evolving. There are lots of excellent learning materials out on the web (Ryan Bates' RailsCasts come to mind) that are leading the charge when they are released and then 6 months down the road, they are slightly wrong.

When something doesn't work as expected, there are at least three possibilities:

1. You haven't had your epiphany yet and you're still not doing it quite right.

2. The thing you are working on was right, but has now been rendered slightly obsolete.

3. The thing you are working on is broken.

The trick is figuring out which possibility is true which is why I'm trying to build a local community / study group so I don't have to climb this steep learning curve alone.

Sorry you had problems with Try Ruby.

Because I already know a bit of Rails and a bit of Ruby, I posted this and immediately turned my attention back to the real tooling up process.

Did you get any value from these sites or do you suggest any alternate learning experiences?

Try Ruby first is a neat demo tool but doesn't work for some of the lessons. This is not due to typos. I tried using this demo for 2 days and found that some commands worked and others gave different errors each time I repeated the same command.

Vern, I've been through Hartl's entire Rails tutorial and done most of the exercises. I found no mistakes in the material. The errors I got were typos from punching in the code by hand (which I recommend, BTW).

It's a great start.

What I'm doing now is learning how to build out apps without using generators or scaffolds.

And I'm porting some of my old c code forward into Ruby to teach myself Ruby syntax and "point of view."

Ubuntu is a very good choice. I went ahead and got the Mac about 9 months ago, and I can't recommend it enough. I spend most of my time working in the bsd bash shell terminal windows. Pretty sweet. All my old dot files still work.

Have fun!
